The All India Football Federation is accepting applications for the post of head coach for the Indian Under-17 women’s team. The federation prefers a female coach but has entrusted the responsibility of managing the 35 probables for the 2020 World Cup to former Indian striker Alex Ambrose.

The Indian football federation wants to attract a reputed female coach ahead of the World Cup that will be hosted by India next year. The idea is to name a coach with a minimum of eight years of experience in professional football. Abhishek Yadav, the national team director, said the appointment is expected to be made by next month.

“We have kick-started the process [of hiring a coach] with the release of advertisements. I am sure we will get a worthy candidate,” Yadav told TOI.

It is also being reported that the federation wants to support the head coach with a specialist in the fitness and goalkeeping departments.

Meanwhile, the 35 probables for the World Cup are in Goa, under the supervision of Ambrose. Yadav did not dismiss the possibility of picking a male coach, but it is clear that the federation want a female.

“For the head coach’s position, a female coach is preferred. We believe it will be good to have a female as the coach, but if we find someone with a very good profile, we might choose him. The other two positions [fitness and goalkeeping] will depend on the applications we receive,” Yadav added.
