India’s grandmaster and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand had to end his Altibox Norway chess tournament in the eighth-placed finish in the blitz phase. This tournament had put the Indian chess ace against reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in the first round of the classical format.

Although the rules are designed as such that the blitz results won’t be affecting the normal tournament as the scores aren’t counted, the outcomes in it affects the number of white games that a player can get.

And this would mean that Anand will be able to get only four white games while the top five finishers in blitz will be getting five whites against four black games in the upcoming 10-player round-robin tournament.

2019 hasn’t been very kind to Anand in the classical format. He did well to end joint third in the Tata Steel tournament, he finished joint fourth in Shamkir and went down further to joint fifth in Grenke Chess Classic.

However, the unpredictable nature of the tournament could see five blacks come in handy for Anand owing to the “draw odds” rule in the Armageddon games. The format, with such an exciting nature, has been tried for the first time in a super-event and could feature some wild games in the Classical games as well.
