India’s newly-appointed T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has suffered an injury in the third round of the 2024 Buchi Babu competition against TNCA XI. He did not return to the field after the third day of the game and was absent hurt during Mumbai’s second innings on the final day.

Suryakumar hurt himself on the third day of the match while fielding at leg slip. TNCA top-order batter Pradosh Ranjan Paul clipped a fuller delivery off a spinner towards his right that went towards Suryakumar stationed close to the batter. However, the Mumbaikar failed to grab the ball, and in the process, injured his finger. Suryakumar looked devastated in pain as he wrung his finger before the medical staff strolled in to assess the condition. Eventually, he trudged off the field and did not return to bat the next day despite Mumbai’s struggle with the bat.

Suryakumar is also a part of Team C in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, scheduled to begin on September 5. The injury certainly raises questions about his availability for the domestic tournament while the BCCI is yet to name a replacement for the Indian skipper.

Speaking about the Buchi Babu fixture, Mumbai incurred a hammering defeat against TNCA XI, failing to chase down 489 runs in the fourth innings. R Sai Kishore starred with the ball with a fifer and three-fer across the two innings for the hosts.

India’s next T20I assignments are scheduled in the first and second week of October against Bangladesh. Following a couple of red-ball affairs, they will be playing three T20Is in Gwalior, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
