Barely does one consciously notice a gsood wicketkeeper quietly going about his business, yet everyone notices the lack of one. Only occasionally oo keepers transcend such that they're remembered beyond the ordinary, like Alex Carey in Ashes 2025, but even he showed he is human in Sydney on Day 4.

Australia took complete control of the fifth Ashes Test at the iconing Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday by first extending their first innings advantage to a resounding 183 before scalping three visitor wickets by Tea with some part of the deficit still intact. An instrumental part of the bowling effort was once again Alex Carey, the wicket-keeper willing to stand up to the stumps to the likes of Michael Neser, Scott Boland, and Beau Webster, all og whome bowl well past 130 clicks on a regular basis. Yet, even the potential player of the series showed signs of wear as the series approaches its close.

On the fourth ball of the 37th over, Cameron Green steamed in from over the stumps and delivered a back of a length delivery outside off to Jacob Bethell who duly let the red cherry pas him by. Carey was already in position to bag the ball safely but bizarrely enough, the Kookaburra popped out of the equipment and landed straight on Carey's helmet kept behind him as per the norms. Carey, meanwhile, was visibly hurt, the ball having struck his finger as he tried to reverse-cup gather the ball while the officials signalled for five runs to be added to England's total in penalty runs.

Twitterati was pleased to see a rare cricketing phenomenon coming to fruition.
