BAN vs AFG | Twitter in splits as Afghan batters slip, slide, and race yet survive comical chaos
Only so many things can go wrong in a passage of play in cricket, unless Bangladesh and Afghanistan are apparently competing to out-humiliate each other. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azmatullah Omarzai offered the Tigers more chances in a single ball than most teams do in a tournament, and still survived.
Bangladesh put up a bowling clinic in St. Vincent on Tuesday to keep their chances alive of making it through to a first-ever World Cup semi-final by restricting Bangladesh to 115/5 in the first innings. The tournament's top run-getter Rahmanullah Gurbaz once again played a key role in his team's efforts with 43 runs but was far from his explosive best, consuming 55 balls. To add to his misery, the opener nearly subjected teammate Azmatullah Omarzai to a horror run-out as well but the duo somehow emerged unscathed in a passage of play bound to make the bloopers hall of fame.
On the fourth ball of the 16th over, Gurbaz cut a Mustafizur Rahman length delivery towards backward point that was well saved by a diving Rishad Hossain inside the circle. As always, Gurbaz was on his toes to sneak a single and confidently ran down the track but Omarzai remained planted at the other end with his eyes fixated on the ball. However, just as Omarzai shed his reluctance, Gurbaz decided the window for a run had closed and the duo bizarrely sprinted next to each other towards the same end. Fortunately for them, there was no direct hit and the ball went for overthrows, but it only compounded the drama. Gurbaz, despite having slipped while rushing back, headed for the other end to the other end and Omarzai hilariously had the same idea. The two once again ran side by side for a few yards before Omarzai ultimately turned around and the two got to their respective ends no harm done.
Twitterati, unsurprisingly, did not let the golden opportunity for the meme-fest slip by.
This is hilarious!
