NAM vs OMA | David Wiese's all-round heroics bail out Namibia in thrilling Super Over triumph

Namibia stumbled in their chase at Bridgetown to take the Group B opener to a Super Over where their 22-run target proved too much for Oman. Earlier, Ruben Trumpelmann's four-fer had restricted Oman to 109 before Mehran Khan's heroic 3/7 included a five-run defence in the final over.

Brief score: NAM 109/6 (20) [Frylinck 45(48), Davin 24(31); Mehran 3/7(3)] tied with OMA 109 (19.4) [Khalid 34(39), Zeeshan 22(20); Trumpelmann 4/21(4)]; NAM 22/0 defeat OMA 10/1 in Super Over

Ruben Trumpelmann set the tone for the encounter straightaway with an inswinging jaffa to trap Kashyap Prajapati plumb in front of the stumps, followed by a toe crusher to dispatch Aqib Ilyas for a golden duck as well. In his next over, the seasoned pacer had the hard-hitting Naseem Khushi caught at mid-off to leave Oman reeling early on. Former captain Zeeshan Maqsood tried to take over the reins with some streaky shots and steered Oman to 36/3 at the end of the powerplay before a Bernard Scholtz delivery turned sharply to send him trotting back to the dugout. Namibia ensured no room for recovery thereafter as the spinners and pacers made ideal use of the two-paced surface with their disciplined lines and lengths. Trumpelmann ended with career-best figures of 4/21, Erasmus' off-breaks earned him two wickets, and globetrotter David Wiese chipped in with three scalps to bowl out the Asian side for a subpar 109 in the final over of the innings.

In response, Namibia got off to a similarly distraught start as Bilal Khan's outswing outdid Michael van Lingen on just the second delivery of the innings. Oman capitalized on the early breakthrough to stifle the African contingent to 32/1 in the powerplay, culminating in Nikolaas Davin holing out for a tame 31-ball 24 in the ninth over after a 42-run stand. However, Jan Frylinck ensured the required run rate never got out of hand and kept chipping in with regular boundaries on either side of skipper Erasmus succumbing for less than run-a-ball 13 in the 15th over. Just when he seemed to have steered the Eagles to safety in the dying stages, Mehran Khan produced a wicket-maiden 18th over to leave the batters 14 to get still. A trademark David Wiese heave put Namibia back into the driving seat but Mehran struck twice in the final over to restore balance. On the last ball, the Eagles sneaked a bye with two to get as keeper Khushi missed the stumps to send the game to Super Over.

Oman inexplicably handed the Kookaburra to Bilal instead of Mehran and the experienced pair of Wiese-Erasmus exploited the opportunity by smashing 21 runs off the over. Wiese then delivered with the ball as well and conceded just 10 to hand Namibia a famous victory in the first T20 World Cup Super Over since 2012.
