ENG vs AUS | Twitter stunned as Head goes 'bang, bang, thank you Sam' in blockbuster 30-run over
Being consistently entertaining at the international level is an art in itself but doing it consistently against the top teams is simply defying all realms of possibilities. Yet, Travis Head continues to prove everyone wrong, as he smashed Sam Curran for 30 runs in the opening T20I on Wednesday.
āEngland and Australia assmebled at the Rose Bowl in Southampton under dark clouds and first-time national team captain Phil Salt wasted no time is choosing to bowl first. He had little idea of the storm that awaited at the other end, intimated by two maximums by Matthew Short in the second over and three boundaries from Head in the third.Ā The men from Down Under had rushed to 41 by the end of four overs butĀ those numbers would pale in comparison to what followed across the next six balls.
Sam Curran was handed the ball for the first time in the match on the back of impressive T20 Blast and Hundred campaigns and nearly deceived Head first-up with a slower bumper onto the deck. However, Head kept his patience to pull it away at the last moment andĀ even thoguh he failed to connect properly, it was enough to drag the ball between mid-on and midwicket for a boundary.Ā Curran flipped his strategy around to go full outside off and was met with an emphatic slice square of the wicket for a maximum. Curran went straighter and Head went longer, this time over long-on to make it 16 from three deliveries. Under severe pressure,Ā Curran opted for the predictable bouncer and was expectedly pulled high and mighty into the stands. Arguably the best shot of the lot came on the penultimate ball when Head slightly shuffled towards leg, went down on one knee, and creamed the length ball with authority over covers and was smiling ear to ear after making the sweet connection. By now, Curran was just wanting to get the over done, and made the cardinal sin of going full and wide,Ā and was promptly met with a similar stroke from a crocuhed Head to make it a ridiculous 30 runs off the over.
The opener eventually reached his half-century of 19 balls before departing on the last ball of the powerplay but his work in the middle was done, as the score read a handsome 86/1 much to Twitterati's amusement.
