Asian Airgun Championship 2019 | Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary win Gold medals

Manu Bhaker has clinched a gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the Asian Airgun Championship, while Saurabh Chaudhary bagged a gold for India in the team event. Not just them, Abhishek Verma and the women’s team have also won medals to make it an eventful day for India.

The 12th Asian Airgun Championship at Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei is turning out to be a fruitful event for the Indian contingent.  17 year old Manu Bhaker has won the gold medal in the individual women’s 10m Air Pistol event, and the 16 year old Saurabh Chaudhary finished fourth to win another gold for India in the men’s team pistol event.

Abhishek Verma, who shot 240.7, also brought laurels to the country as he settled for the silver medal in the 10m event, going down after a tough fight with Korean Mose Kim who scored only 0.2 higher than Abhishek.

Only eight shooters would qualify for the finals, and all the three Indians did well to find a place in the penultimate round. Chaudhary was the first to qualify with a top score of 587, followed by Ravinder at four with 578 and Abhishek at fifth with a score of 577.

Saurabh (198.8) finished fourth after being beaten by Bronze medalist Taehwan Lee of Korea in a shoot-off, whereas Ravinder finished at seven with 136.3 points. But still, the Indian trio finished 12 points ahead of Gold medallists Korea, with a score of 1742 on the board.

With respect to the women’s pistol team event, Bhaker shot 575 out of 600 to qualify second, and Shri Vivetha was the only other Indian women to reach the finals at six. The 2018 ISSF World Cup Gold medallist fought it out with Hong Kong’s Shing Ho Ching in the 24 shot final, and ended up with a lead in the end stages, with a score of 239 against her closest rival’s 239.9. 

The twelfth Asian Shotgun Championship is a nine day event scheduled between March 25 and April 2, and India will be hopeful of securing more medals in the next half of the event.
