Dutee Chand has stressed on the importance of focusing on technical details in 100 metres events of athletics. Chand is currently preparing for the World University Games to be held in Italy this year and will now approach new union sports minister Kiren Rijiju for her inclusion in TOP scheme.

After winning two silver medals at the Asian Games last year, Dutee Chand is not having a great 2019 so far. She couldn’t perform as per expectations in her events at the Asian Athletics Championships and was able to claim only a bronze medal in the 200m event. With the Olympics in mind for next year and the Doha World Championships, this year Chand has stressed on the technical requirements of the 100m race.

“I had planned to go to Florida but the government did not provide funding. That’s why I didn’t go. I plan to go next year and now I am training in Hyderabad,” Chand told PTI.

“100 metres is a technical event, so you have to focus on every detail. From start to finish. I have shortcomings at every stage. So I can get more exposure from those people (foreign trainers). Basically, when I run, my body gets tight at the last moment. I still don’t know why it happens. So, I will have to correct that.”

The Odisha sprinter was not added to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Indian government and had appealed to the Sports Minister earlier when Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was in charge of the ministry. The athlete has now planned to approach the current minister Rijiju for her inclusion in the scheme.

“I had appealed to (Rajyavardhan) Rathore sir (the previous sports minister), and he said he will do it. Now the minister has changed, so I will have to approach him again.”

“Everyone keeps telling we will do it but it hasn’t happened so far. Our government’s train runs very slow. Jab station mein lagega tab chadenge. (When it halts at the station then I will board it),” Chand said.
