Young Indian star athlete Hima Das has revealed that she was nervous before her 400m finals, where she won a silver medal at the Asian Games in Indonesia as the competition was tough. However, Das has managed to beat the national record twice in two days with a best of 50.59 seconds.

Hima, the reigning Under-20 world champion, had qualified for the final with a national record time of 51.00 seconds on August 25, bettering the 14-year-old mark set by Manjeet Kaur (51.05) in Chennai in 2004. The 18-year-old clocked yet another national record time of 50.59 seconds in the final race to win the silver, behind pre-race favourite Bahrain’s Salwa Naser who won the gold with a new Games record time of 50.09 seconds.

Speaking about her race, Hima said she was nervous before it. She further praised Naser, the 2017 World Championships silver medalist and winner of four legs of Diamond League Series this year, as the Bahraini did not have to exert much in the end. Hima added that she learned a bit about the running technique as well from Naser.

“You surely get nervous. They don’t see but only I know how nervous I get. Naser is a big athlete, I am happy to compete with her and I learnt in both the races. I grabbed a bit about race technique but it’s difficult to explain,” Hima said.

However, Hima further said she has never taken the reputation of a competitor into consideration while stepping on the track.

“They are all good athletes. Good athletes will be there at good competitions but I don’t think about them, I just think of bettering my own time,” she added.

When asked about her preparation, Hima said her coach Galina Bukharina did not prepare any special strategy for the final and she did not plan her final race in order to go with the flow.

“It was a tough competition, I knew, I am happy I bettered my mark. I was not confident but knew I will better by some margin. When you run, there is no time to think about who will be ahead or behind, you just run,” Hima concluded.
