The 44-year-old embarked on his coaching journey after a knee injury concluded his playing career during the 2015 Ashes series in England. He donned the coaching hat and achieved notable success with the Australian under-19 team, guiding them at the 2018 and 2020 World Cups. In 2019, Harris was appointed as the bowling coach of the Brisbane Heat men's team for the Big Bash League season. The following year, he became the bowling coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals, leading the team to the finals in 2020.
"I'm thrilled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of South Australia where I began my first-class playing journey more than 20 years ago.” Harris said in a statement.
“Having worked closely with the team last summer and during our current pre-season training, I know what this squad is capable of and can't wait to get started and build on the positive steps we saw last year.”
South Australia's first home game of the 2024/25 season is a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at Adelaide Oval from November 1-4, followed by a One Day Cup fixture against Victoria at Karen Rolton Oval on November 6.
