Twitter reacts as Faf du Plessis' desperate attempt at DRS leaves him embarrassed

South Africa’s morale has been evidently down after being steamrolled by India in this series which was won by the hosts 2-0 and their attempts have all been desperate. Skipper Faf du Plessis was seen pulling off another such stunt that left the team with one review short and him embarrassed.

South Africa got their only breakthrough on Day 2 with Goerge Linde dismissing Ajinkya Rahane but Rohit Sharma held the crease and bettered his previous highest score of 177 in Tests. He was cruising towards his double hundred, when at 179*, in Dane Piedt’s over to Sharma an appeal was heard. Rohit tried to push the ball for a sweep that slid off the pitch but couldn’t make contact with the bat.

The appeal didn’t impress the umpire, Richard Illingworth, as he was sure that it pitched outside leg. Much to everyone’s surprise, Faf du Plessis came forward and pressed for a review when even the bowler wasn’t convinced. The Proteas skipper seemed so sure of his challenge against the on-field not-out decision that he raised his forefinger up to gesture ‘out’. But that act was ridiculed by ball-tracking that clearly showed the ball pitching outside leg indeed and Illingworth's decision was upheld in the end. The umpire signalled a leg-bye and Faf was left clearly embarrassed.
