Gautam Gambhir, among five sportspersons, conferred with Padma Awards

Former India cricketer, Gautam Gambhir, and four other sports personalities were honored with Padma Award from the hands of President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday for their contribution to the sporting fraternity. The investiture ceremony for the awards was held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Former India opener, Gautam Gambhir, who led India to its second World Cup title in 2011 was bestowed with the Padma Award by President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday. Gambhir was influential in the inaugural T20 World Cup win and also scored a match-winning 97 in the final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in 2011.

Along with the former Delhi cricketer, India football team skipper and highest goal scorer Sunil Chhetri, archer Bombayla Devi Laishram and renowned female basketball player Prashanti Singh were also given the same honour at the awards ceremony which was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today.

Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines and fields of activities, viz- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. This year 112 personalities received the honour, out of which 56 personalities were handed their trophies on March 11 and the rest were accorded with the awards on Saturday.
