For the second consecutive day in the 2019 World Cup, matches ended as no result due to persistent downpour in Bristol all day running and both the teams walked away with one point each. There was a 90% chance of rain in Bristol on Wednesday and the dark and grey cloud ensured that there was no hope of a prompt 10.30am start.
The game had been delayed for as many as three times but all three pitch inspections had to be called off at different stages. Although the ground staff tried their level best to flush out the water all the across the outfield, intermittent rain didn’t help their cause. The only way the game could have been played was a 20-over affair, with the cut-off time being 16.19, but after seeing, no chance of the ground being ready for it, the match officials eventually called off the game at 1.55pm.
This has also become Sri Lanka's second rained-off game in this World Cup, their first being against Pakistan on June 7 at this very venue.
