23 year old Nicholas Pooran had only played a single One Day International before making his World Cup debut against Pakistan on Friday, where he introduced himself to the world with a quickfire 34 off just 19 balls in a complete domination of the subcontinent nation. Having been only 3 years old when Chris Gayle made his ODI debut against India in 1999, it must certainly feel like a dream come true for the youngster from Trinidad and Tobago.
“I’m always very thankful for that. I remember that years back when I was going to high school, I would wake up early morning, even if West Indies were playing in England... just to watch Chris play. It’s a wonderful feeling to play with Chris, who's playing his last World Cup,” he said.
39 year old Chris Gayle has been in sensational form off late, having seemed to have recovered his touch after a long hiatus from the tema just in time for what he confirmed would be his last World Cup for the Caribbean nation. He has been running high on his characteristic self confidence, as was evident from an interview before the World Cup commenced in which he referred to himself as the ‘Universe Boss.’ He scored a glamorous half century in another great display of hard hitting against Pakistan while Pooran watched on from the other end.
“Watching him taking on Wahab (Riaz's) short ball, I was a bit scared sometimes, maybe he’ll hit one back at me. So, I was giving myself enough chances. I was staying wide of the crease. He gave me a lot of confidence. That's good for the team. He going out there and expressing himself the way he, did gives the team the confidence that we should back our skills, execute them and play fearless cricket,” Pooran remarked humorously.
West Indies have had a long 5 day rest ahead of their clash with reigning World Champions Australia on Thursday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
