India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was fined 50 per cent of his match fees and slapped with three demerit points for causing damage to the playing surface during the second day of the ongoing third and final Test against New Zealand in Indore.

Jadeja was hauled by umpire Bruce Oxenford for repeatedly running down the middle of the pitch that also saw the Kiwis being awarded five penalty runs.

Jadeja’s act was in direct violation of Article 2.2.11 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘causing avoidable damage to the pitch during an international match’.

“Jadeja, after previously receiving two informal and one official warning, infringed the protected area for the fourth time and damaged it,” a statement from the International Cricket Council said.

Jadeja was docked with three demerit points as per a revision of the code of conduct and could be suspended from one Test, or two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first, if he receives one more demerit point in the next two years.
