In tennis, there are times when winning is not the most important thing on a player’s mind, but rather how you win that makes you a true sportsman. After a collision with a ball boy at the French Open, Damir Dzumhur proved himself to be true sportsman as he made sure the kid was safe.
The 2018 French Open is turning out to be a fierce competition as always with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and others battling it out for ultimate glory. However, amongst all the rivalry sometimes we forget to focus on the true purpose of playing the sport, which was to unite people irrespective of age, caste or culture.
In the match between Alexander Zverev of Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur, the crowd at the first on Court Philippe-Chatrier witnessed something truly touching. During the fourth set when Dzumhur served at 0-1 and 40-15, collided with a ball boy which resulted in the youngster losing his balance and was clearly suffering a lot of pain.
Both Dzumhur and the ball boy went for an aerial ball as both had eyes on the ball which resulted in the unfortunate collision. But in a stunning show of class and sportsmanship, the ace from Bosnia and Herzegovina helped the kid stand up and took him to the side of the court. The chair umpire, too, came down to check on the kid before the youngster walked off to the side for some professional medical attention.

Dzumhur, who’s ranked 29 in the ATP rankings, led by two sets to one before the collision having won the second and third set (6-3, 6-4), although he dropped the first set (3-6). German player, Zverev’s groundstroke went long and as Dzumhur tried to hit it back, his forehand produced a mishit which caused the ball to go high up in the sky and cause the collision.
