Lakshya Sen bags silver medal at Youth Olympics in men’s singles badminton

India’s Lakshya Sen bagged a silver medal in men’s singles badminton as he lost the final match against Li Shifeng of China at the ongoing Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. Earlier in the year, Sen had beaten the same opponent at the Asian Championship en route his Gold medal winning performance.

Another medal was added to India’s medals tally of the Youth Olympics on Friday when Lakshya Sen brought a silver for India. He lost 15-21 19-21 in a 42-minute final match to the Chinese youngster Li Shifeng. Though the reigning Asian Champion, Sen was totally outplayed in the final which was decided in straight sets. 

The first game was totally a one sided affair which Sen lost 15-21 in 17 minutes. Early in the first game, Shifeng totally dominated the proceedings and at one stage he led the game at 14-5. Sen managed to make a partial comeback and the score reached 13-16, but it was only a partial comeback as said earlier and Sen lost thereafter easily.

In the second game, though the Chinese led throughout the game, Sen managed to get close a couple of times. Initially in the first half at 7-8 Sen looked to equalise but soon lost the plot and Shifeng scampered ahead to 12-7 then again at the match point Sen brought the point difference to one point but lost the match anyway.

The performance for India at this youth Olympics has been its best ever with team already winning seven medals which include three gold and four silver medals. With five more days to go for the closing ceremony the medal count for India is expected to increase.
