Asian Para Games | Sharad Kumar wins gold in men’s high jump as India close in on 50 medals haul
Defending champion Sharad Kumar broke two records en route to his second successive gold medal in the Asian Para games on the sixth day. It was a rare feat for India when all the three medal podiums were occupied by Indians as the silver and bronze in the high jump event were also bagged by them.
It was a good sixth day for Indians at the Asian Para games as India bagged medals in various events ranging from high jump to Kumar bettered the Asian as well as the Games record with a jump of 1.90m to claim the gold medal in the T42/63 category, which covers lower limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power and impaired range of movement.
Kumar had suffered paralysis in his left leg at the age of two after being administered a spurious polio medicine at the local eradication drive. He was a former world number one in the sport and hails from Bihar.
Whereas in the same event, Varun Bhati with a jump of 1.82m got the silver even as the bronze medal was bagged by another Indian Thangavelu Mariyappan who jumped 1.67m.

In the T45/46/47 classification for men's 400m, Sandeep Maan fetched a bronze medal. In the same category of women’s section, Jayanti Behera got the 400m silver. The T45/46/47 and T44, 62/64 deal with the leg length difference and upper limb deficiencies.
In the women's 400m Radha Venkatesh took the bronze medal in T12 classification that deals with visual impairment. India got another bronze with Swapnil Patil standing third in the men's 400m freestyle S10. The S10 category covers visual impairment. This medal was in the swimming event.
