Shubhankar Sharma finishes tied-32nd after first round of Turkish Airlines Open

Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma was placed tied-32nd at the end of the first round of the Turkish Airlines Open after he initially opened with a modest 1-under 70 at the start of the day. Sharma is currently in the lead to become the Harry Cotton Rookie of the Year in the ongoing season.

At just the age of 22, Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma certainly has a bright future ahead of himself in the sport of golf. At the ongoing Turkish Airlines Open, Sharma opened with a modest 1-under 70 to be placed tied-32nd at the end of the first round in Antalya on Thursday. 

After five holes at 2-over with a wayward shot and a three-putt from 15 feet, the Indian youngster recovered very well around the turn with three birdies in four holes. When it looked that Sharma would finish at 2-under, he left a chip too short on the 18th to drop a shot to finish at 1-under 70. The Chandigarh-based golfer had four birdies between seventh and 13th and three bogeys on first, fifth and 18th throughout the course of the day.

“I gave away two silly bogeys early. I got one back on seventh as I was steady and played well thereafter especially between 10th and 12th where I had three birdies. The last hole bogey was a disappointment and left a bitter taste, as I hit a poor chip and missed the longish par putt,” Sharma told PTI.

Shubhankar is also in the running to lift the Harry Cotton Rookie of the year title for the current season after having impressed on the international circuit so far. The youngster felt that he had a productive day in Antalya and looked forward to the rest of the competition.

“This course is excellent and very beautiful. The weather was fine and I just missed out a couple of shots there with errors, but it is just the first day. The greens were much faster than on practice days and after a few holes I had adjusted,” Sharma added.
