CWG 2018 | Pardeep Singh clinches silver for India in 105 kg Weightlifting
Yet another day at the Games and yet another medal for India in weightlifting as Pardeep Singh finished second in the Menâs 105 kg category in a grueling match. Pardeep finished with a total lift of 352 kg, which was eight kgs lesser than the eventual winner Sanele Mao, of Samoa.
Pardeep had to reduce the deficit and he decided to go for 200 kg in the clean and jerk event. And his successful attempt of a good 200 kg also saw him closing in on Mao for some time before the huge man from Samoa lifted a whopping 206 kgs. That had taken the gold almost out of Pardeepâs hands and he needed something extraordinary to do it.
Pardeep attempted a lift of 209 kg in his second attempt but the judges saw a shaky elbow and deemed the attempt as an unsuccessful one. Wary of Maoâs ability, Pardeep had to go for a CWG record of 211 kg in his final go and wanted his opponent to go first. It was too much to ask for, and after Mao failed to lift it, Pardeep had to bow out as well. The interesting thing is, however, would Pardeep had attempted a 206 kg lift, he had a big chance of winning the gold.
