Report | Roma set to meet Manchester United’s fee for Chris Smalling

Manchester United’s Chris Smalling who is on loan at AS Roma has dazzled at his new club impressing the coach and the fans. Considering the large impact the English defender has had in Rome, Roma are ready to make the loan deal permanent by paying an additional sum of €15 million the Red Devils.

Chris Smalling moved to Roma on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deemed him surplus to requirements. The Italian outfit paid €4 million upfront and had an option to buy. Chris Smalling scored his first club goal against Udinese and has already convinced Roma officials and the fans for his defensive performances. The 29 year old’s defensive performances have given assurances to Paulo Fonseca that the defender will be a hit for Roma and the club are ready to exercise their buying option, as reported by Corriere Dello Sport.

Fonseca has asked Gianluca Petrachi, the sporting director of Roma, to accelerate the talks of Smalling’s transfer fees. A recent meeting between the player’s representatives and the Giallorosi revealed that Manchester United were demanding €18 million from the Serie A club whereas Romans were prepared to pay only €10 million.

The report further added that Smalling has told Ed Woodward and the club officials that he wants to remain in Italy’s capital and aims to flourish under Fonseca. The report also suggested that a deal may be agreed in the coming weeks with Roma aiming to close the deal at €15 million. Petrachi is also in contact with Smalling’s agent and is discussing the contract the Englishman will receive once he moves to Roma permanently.

The 29 year old has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils since moving to Old Trafford in 2010. After spending 9 seasons at the Theatre of Dreams, Smalling is ready to bid farewell and join Roma in Italy.
