Asian World Cup qualifiers | Amarajit Singh Kiyam to miss clashes against Oman and Qatar
In a huge blow to India’s chances of starting strong in the Asian World Cup qualifiers, midfielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam has broken his hand and will miss matches against Oman and Qatar. The U-17 World Cup hero had become an integral part of Igor Stimac’s three-man midfield in recent times.
Amarjit was already a part of Stimac's Indian team, after the coach had made the initial trim to reduce the squad to 28 players, and would have most probably made it into the first eleven after fitting in perfectly in the midfield trio alongside Sahal Abdul Samad and Anirudh Thapa.
However, with him suffering a broken hand on Thursday, with less than a month to go for India’s campaign of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the youngster has been ruled out of the crucial clashes against Oman and Qatar. The midfielder was the captain of India in the U-17 World Cup in 2017, and has long been seen as a potential captain for the national team, which was evident in the King’s Cup, where India finished third.
The Blue Tigers will begin their campaign against Oman on September 5 in Guwahati, which would be followed by an away and the toughest game of their group against Asian champions Qatar in Doha on September 10. Apart from those two sides, India also have Afghanistan and Bangladesh in their group.
