UP Warriorz have now experienced a terrible start yet again in the Women's Premier League. Yesterday, the team lost a close game against Delhi Capitals, losing the game at the very last ball. At this moment, the decision taken by Abhishek Nayar during the first innings has come down to scrutiny.
UP Warriorz had entered the Women's Premier League with high hopes. The team had a number of changes in their squad, and a few massive changes were also made to their coaching staff. , who has been a notable figure in coaching, joined the team as the Head Coach for the current season.
However, the start of the tournament has not been well for the team. They still stand at the last spot in the WPL standings, losing all of the three games they have played till now. In its previous match against Delhi Capitals, the match went till the final ball, before Delhi finished the game with a boundary.
1. Abhishek Nayar's Controversial Call
In the match between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz, both teams eyed their first win of the season. UP Warriorz had a great start with the bat, and the team even looked to finish their innings with great firepower. Harleen Deol and Meg Lanning started to play well, after two quick wickets fell for the team in the powerplay.
When was batting at the score of 47, she was called off by the team. Deol missed out to play a big shot in the 17th over, and immediately, the team decided to call her back. Chloe Tyron started to walk towards the crease, and Harleen Deol was walking back in disappointment, as she missed out her half-century.
But this , as Chloe Tyron also failed to score well. Chloe Tyron, Sophie Ecclestone, and Asha Sobhana were able to score 5 runs combined. Towards the final three overs, the team was only able to score 13 runs, as they also lost more wickets.
It seemed this decision turned in favour of the team for the majority of the game. The match went till the very last over, but Delhi Capitals were able to win it on the very last ball. With this, UP Warriorz now remain the only team who have not secured even a single win in the WPL till now.
2. What UP Warriorz Said After Loss?
Lisa Sthalekar, the Mentor of , talked about this matter. She said, “One thing that I've learnt about Abhishek pretty quickly is he's a real student of the game. He watches lots of footage, he has a good understanding of oppositions, our players, our strengths and our weaknesses. He turned to me and he goes, 'I think it's time we need to potentially bring Harleen off'. And I was like, 'OK, this isn't a normal thing in the women's game'.”
She further said, “Then another over came and she just wasn't able to get that swing, that power that we needed to clear the boundary. So then it was decided [to take Harleen off], and then he spoke to Meg and a couple of the coaches just quickly to make sure we were all on the same page. And then we pulled the trigger.”
But Sthalekar herself had some questions on the same. She said, “The only thing I questioned [regarding retiring out Harleen] was Meg had got out [only a few deliveries earlier] and I said, 'if we pull her the next over, then you've got two new batters. She's kind of got used to the conditions'. But I think we had about 40 (24) deliveries left. So it's like, how are we going to maximise the 40 (24) deliveries? We still felt with Chloe , Asha, with Sophie , that we still had firepower.”
3. Two Days, Two Retired Outs
In the previous three editions of the Women's Premier League, no player was retired out. But over the last two games, . In the match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants, Gujarat took the decision to retire Ayushi Soni. This eventually came in a losing cause for the team, as Mumbai won the game.
In the next WPL match between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals, this happened with Harleen Deol. She scored 47 runs, before being retired out. But the team's batting line-up trembled, which didn't allow them to post a competitive total. Delhi Capitals eventually went on to win the game towards the final ball.
