Hobart Hurricanes beat Adelaide Strikers by 37 runs in a BBL match in Hobart on Friday. The pace duo of Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis, alongside Rishad Hossain, skittled out the visitors, after Mitchell Owen led the hosts to a challenging total, to notch up their fourth win in the last five games.

‌Hobart Hurricanes continued their run at the top of the Big Bash League points table with a dominant 37-run win over Adelaide Strikers in Hobart on Friday. It was a top bowling performance from the home side, with Rishad Hossain picking up a three-wicket haul and Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis taking two wickets each to restrict the visitors to 141/9 despite a swashbuckling half-century from Liam Scott. Earlier, the Hurricanes’ batters led by Mitchell Owen came up with a collective display to help them to a challenging total to set the platform for their fourth win in five matches.

After being put in to bat at the Bellerive Oval, the Hurricanes openers looked in good nick as Tim Ward hit consecutive boundaries off Luke Wood in the opening over. Meanwhile, his partner Owen took Scott to the cleaners, smashing two sixes and fours in a 21-run second over. The all-rounder slammed two more maximums off Wood in the next over before departing for an entertaining cameo of 33 (2*4, 4*6) off just nine balls. However, new batter Rehan Ahmed kept up the pace with a six and a four as the home side ended the four-over powerplay at an impressive 55/1. But the visitors pulled things back with the introduction of spin as the quartet of Tabraiz Shamsi, Matthew Short, Lloyd Pope, and Jerrssis Wadia gave away just 41 runs in the next six overs and also dismissed both set batters Ahmed and Ward. The England all-rounder had two fours and two sixes in his 17-ball 29, while the opener walked back after a run-a-ball 17. Though Nikhil Chaudhary and Ben McDermott steadied things with a 40-run stand, the pattern repeated for the home side, with both batters back in the hut in the space of two balls. However, wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade played a crucial knock to take the side past the 150-run mark. The veteran batter hit a 19-ball 27 to power the hosts to 178/6, while the England pace duo of Wood and Jamie Overton picked up 2/48 and 2/13 in four and two overs, respectively.

The Strikers’ chase started on a horrific note as Riley Meredith packed off skipper Short and Mackenzie Harvey in the second over, ending with a double-wicket maiden. From then on, there was no looking back for the home side as captain Nathan Ellis complemented Meredith with another double-wicket over to put the visitors in deep trouble at 8/4 after just three overs. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the lack of meaningful partnerships bit the Strikers and left Scott stranded at one end. The Adelaide-based outfit would have finished embarrassingly if not for the all-rounder’s rearguard action at the crease. He completed his half-century in the 14th over before taking the side past the three-figure mark. Scott’s unbeaten knock of 91 off 58 balls, which included five sixes and six fours, helped the visitors reduce the margin of defeat. Meanwhile, leg-spinner Hossain ended with figures of 3/26 in four overs, and Meredith and Ellis picked up 2/16 and 2/7, in three and two overs, respectively.
