BBL | Twitter reacts as lack of gully cricket experience blights Hurricanes' attempt to search for lost ball

Cricket pervades Indian culture in incredulous ways, so much so that playing in the 'gully' or street has been appropriated globally. Australia seemed to become the latest entrant to that list on Saturday but not by choice, as players were left looking for lost balls like the average street game.

David Warner's first BBL ton in 14 years for Sydney Thunder included a lost ball, against Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday

Hobart Hurricanes climbed to the top of the Big Bash League table at the Sydney Showground Stadium on Saturday after subjecting the Thunder to a brutal six-wicket loss despite the hosts racking up an impressive total of 206/4. Skipper David Warner starred with an unbeaten 130 off just 65 deliveries, bringing up his second BBL ton 14 years on from his maiden effort on debut for the very same team, and was laced with a sensational nine maximums alongwith 11 boundaries. Amidst all the big shots, one in particular caused a brief delay in the game for completely bizarre reasons.

On the first ball of the final over, Warner read an Ellis slower bumper early and patiently waited for it before depositing the Kookaburra over the deep square leg boundary for an 85-metre maximum. However, as the ball dipped beyond the hoardings, it managed to perfectly penetrate the slightest of guttural gaps beneath the fence beyond which the crowd was seated and disappeared into the blackhole. When fielder Will Prestwidge arrived to the scene to collect the Kookaburra, he was left utterly confused until being informed of the ball's whereabouts. The yougnster promptly went prone on his stomach as he tried to peer into the gap but expectedly came up empty handed and the officials had no choice but to call for a replacement ball.

Twitterati could not help but draw comparisons with the frequent occurrence of such incidents in games of gully cricket.
