The Gujarat Giants beat the UP Warriorz by six wickets to open their winning account in the ensuing Women’s Premier League. Ashleigh Gardner and Deandra Dottin’s all-round show peppered the UP Warriorz below-par efforts at the Kotambi Stadium as the latter quest for their first win.

Going by the trend, Gujarat giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner opted to field first during the toss, trying to capitalise on the dew. The idea to rotate four bowlers with the new ball worked well as the UP openers were sent packing inside a 41-run powerplay. The idea to promote herself to No. 4 worked well for Deepti Sharma, who stabilised the innings, thanks to Uma Chetry’s assistance in a 51-run third-wicket stand. With 73/3 at the halfway mark, middle order’s hard yards were bruised by Priya Mishra’s fantastic bowling as she removed Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris in the next over before outsmarting Deepti for 39 in the 15th over. As the score read 111/7 in 16 overs, cameos from Alana King and Saima Thakor propelled the score to 143 runs in 20 overs.

In reply, the Giants faced early setbacks with Grace Harris and Sophie Ecclestone striking early before Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner stabilised the stage leading up to a 41-run powerplay. The South African struggled in patches and her 24-ball 22 knock finally came to an end with Ecclestone getting her second scalp in the ninth over. Continuing with her booming form, Gardner tormented the opposition bowlers with a 32-ball 52 before the ploy to summon Tahlia McGrath worked in the 12th over. With 86/4 by the twelfth over, the Giants were just a couple of runs ahead compared to their opposition, when Deandra Dottin announced her arrival. Under Harleen Deol’s presence, the Windies veteran consolidated 26 runs in the next couple of overs, curtailing the equation to 32 required off the last six overs. Three modest overs followed before the pair extracted 13 runs off the 18th over to finish the chase.
