WATCH | Tom Banton in clutches channels inner Glenn Maxwell to drub Somerset in epic fightback
An injured Lion can be more dangerous than a fitter one to hunt down its prey. Somerset top-order batter Tom Banton’s spirit resembled a similar nature as the young gun did not give up due to his sustained injury as he pulled off a Glenn Maxwell-like feat by taking down the Surrey bowlers.
In this week’s heavyweight clash between Surrey and Somerset, the latter won the toss and elected to field first at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. Riding on the back of Banton’s superb 138 and Archie Vaughan’s six-fer, they allowed only four runs lead to Surrey at the end of the match’s second innings. With Banton being injured in the game, the team’s misery in the third innings compelled his gusty spirit to take centre stage on the fourth day.
With Somserset’s score reading 153/9, Banton was left with no choice but to hobble into the field with the willow in hand. Initially, he was seen stonewalling the deliveries before opting for scoring options. The right-handed batter whacked the bat around with no feet movement with a reverse sweep against Shakib Al Hasan being the highlight feature of all. His valiant 46 at the end, helped them to gain a considerable 220 runs lead with his one-legged show resembling Glenn Maxwell's utter brilliance against Afghanistan in the World Cup 2023. Eventually, fifers each from Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach curbed Surrey to 109, leaving Somerset with an epic win by 111 runs. Following their win, Banton was seen hobbling into the field with clutches trying to be a part of the insane Somerset celebration.
