WBBL | Twitter reacts to Perry and Gardner match Mooney and King in dramatic Super Over tie
Forty-two overs of play between the Perth Scorchers Women and the Sydney Sixers Women was not enough to separate the winner and loser. Ashleigh Gardner’s four-for and Ellyse Perry’s 67 drew labelled with the hosts before Mikayla Hinkley’s consecutive fours made way for tie in Hobart.
In response, Alana King and Chloe Ainsworth were decent enough with the ball to offer early breakthroughs. Under tough circumstances, Ellyse Perry chalked out 67 runs off 53 balls but failed to gain assistance from the other hand, courtesy of King’s three-fer. The Sixers needed 24 to win from the last three overs with settled Perry at one end but the wrist-spinner ended up with the last laugh in the next over. Soon, Maitlan Brown followed suit on the next ball, leaving the Sixers 16 off 12 balls. A wicket fell in the next over, curtailing the equation down to 12 needed off the last over. Five doubles followed from Michael Carmichael before the last attempt resulted in a single and a run out. With the scores tied at 126, the Super Over commenced with Perry and Gardner opening for the visitors. A six and a four from the skipper propelled them to 15 runs before Gardner took the ball in hand eyeing a defense. She did outsmart fellow Aussie, Mooney on the second ball but a hattrick of fours on the last three balls from Mikayla Hinkley equaled the tally, in what turned out to be a dramatic event at the Bellerive Oval. Ultimately, both teams will share points after the Super Over was tied and Perry was adjudged the Player of the Match.
