The last thing a team needs after an early collapse is a horrid run-out, yet that is exactly what was in store for Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede. Andre Russell seemed to be in a menacing mood until the well-set Venkatesh Iyer decided to sacrifice his partner to safeguard his own wicket.

K‌olkata Knight Riders managed an underwhelming 169 after being asked to bat first, courtesy of an early collapse that had left them reeling at 57/5 in the seventh over. Venkatesh Iyer proved to be the highest scorer for the Purple Army with a valiant knock of 70 from 52 deliveries but the all-rounder left a sour taste in the mouth of the fans given his antics at the death left the time a few short of the desired score.

The incident in question took place on the final delivery of the 17th over when Venkatesh reverse swept a Hardik Pandya delivery towards the square leg thus creating the opportunity for a single. Russell obliged by sprinting down the other end but his partner was too busy ball-watching and by the time Venkatesh snapped out of his trance, Russell had already reached the other end. However, instead of attempting to make a run for it, Venkatesh simply returned to his callously while indicating Russell to go back, causing the Caribbean to execute a quick turnaround. His effort was not nearly enough as Hardik managed to collect a wide throw before turning around and breaking the stumps with an agile effort to catch Russell well short of the crease.

The West Indies veteran, who thus departed for seven off two deliveries, was enraged at the manner in which he lost his wicket as apparent by his reaction and the Twitterati was quick to comment on the chaotic mixup.

Mix up

He is not happy

He grabs it

Forget to send back

Match over

Sacrificed

In vain

Almost two

Hard luck

Wrong decision
