AUS vs ENG | Twitter reacts as Australia delivered a clinical performance outclassing England in Barbados
Australia beat England by 36 runs in the Group B clash at Barbados. Australia batters amassed a commendable total of 201/7 in their allotted 20 overs while a promising start from Philip Salt and Jos Buttler went in vain as England's middle order faltered, managing to score 165/6 in 20 overs.
One of the most anticipated clashes of the ICC T20 World Cup unfolded as Australia squared off with England in the Group B showdown at Barbados. Opting to field first after winning the toss, England's decision initially backfired. Aussie openers Travis Head and David Warner blazed a trail, cruising the scorecard to 55/0 within four overs. However, England found a glimmer of hope as Moeen Ali and Jofra Archer struck, dismissing the dynamic duo in the fifth and sixth overs, leaving Australia at 74/2 by the end of the powerplay. Yet, Australia refused to relent. Captain Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell steadied the ship, forging a resilient 45-run partnership that propelled the score to 119/2 by the 12th over, stabilizing the Aussie batting lineup. As the duo was going strong, Liam Livingstone scalped Marsh in the 14th over and Ali struck again and picked up Maxwell in the next over. However, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David kept the scorecard ticking and took the 2021 champions to 160/4 in 16 overs. After David’s departure in the 17th over, Matthew Wade and Stonis’ 32-run stand breached the 200 mark this season, and took Australia to 201/7 in 20 overs. England got off to a blitzkrieg as Phil Salt and Jos Buttler raced to 40/0 within four overs, highlighted by Salt's massive 106-meter six in the third over. The pair showcased their skills, reaching 73/0 in seven overs. However, Adam Zampa ended their partnership by dismissing Salt in the eighth over. England's woes continued as Zampa claimed Buttler's wicket in the 10th over, and Stonis removed Will Jacks in the following one. Despite Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow stabilizing the innings, reaching 124/3 in 14 overs, Bairstow fell to Josh Hazlewood's slower length ball in the 15th over. The momentum favoured Australia as Ali departed in the 16th over, leaving England at 128/5. With Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone at the crease, England required 54 runs from the last two overs, reaching 148/5 in 18 overs. However, Livingstone's dismissal in the 19th over further dashed England's hopes. With 50 runs needed off the final over, Australia secured victory, with England managing 165/6, falling short by 36 runs.
