AFG vs NZ | Twitter stunned as Gurbaz smokes Mitchell out of the stadium for sensational 105 metre six
The meteoric rise of Afghanistan has been at the forefront of storylines in the past few World Cups and Friday proved to be just another showcase of their raw prowess. Their opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz drove their efforts with a knock of 80, hallmarked by a statement six out of Guyana late on.
Afghanistan hit the accelerator in the second half of their innings at the Providence Stadium to go from 55/0 after 10 overs to a competitive total of 159/6 at the end of their innings. Their efforts were once again headlined by the consistent opening duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz as the two put up a 103-run stand at the top of the order with the latter particularly impressive. The wicket-keeper batter smashed five boundaries and as many maximums in his 56-ball knock of 80, the last of which is bound to be in the running for the shot of the tournament, if not the year.
Mismanagement of his bowling resources meant Kane Williamson had to hand the crucial penultimate over to Daryl Mitchell and the all-rounder was greeted by Gurbaz with a brilliant heave across the line for a 93-metre six but the wicket-keeper batter had saved his best for last. Mitchell missed the mark on an attempted yorker and Gurbaz capitalized by getting low to the ground with a bent knee before lofting the half-volley straight over the bowler's head with a horizontal bat. The Kookaburra sprung off the willow like a missile and ended up clearing the roof of the ground. To make the shot even more iconic, Gurbaz channelled his trademark flamboyance by holding the pose until the cameras panned back to him while the big screen read a stunning 105 metres.
Twitter was quick to send glowing praise the way of the young batter quickly moving up the ranks in global cricket.
