There are fairytale starts, and then there is the start Ruben Trumpelmann got Namibia off to in their T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Oman at Bridgetown. The big left-arm quick swung things into motion by dispatching two Omani batters in as many balls under the lights with a brand new Kookaburra.

‌Namibia and Oman got set to get things underway in Group B of the latest World T20 in an anticipated close battle at the Kensington Oval in Guyana. Gerhard Erasmus won the toss for the African nation and chose to bowl first, hoping to inflict some early damage with his threatening pace attack led by the experienced Ruben Trumpelmann. The 26-year-old did not disappoint, producing a cricket sequence that would live long in Namibian cricketing folklore.

First up against the tall left-armer was Kashyap Prajapati who aimed to get off the mark straightaway with an attempted flick down leg side. However, the full delivery swung in subtly late in its trajectory but the deviation was enough to beat the willow and thump into the opener's front pad leading to a plumb Leg Before Wicket. Skipper Aqib Ilyas walked in next and was met by an even more devastating delivery to begin his knock. Trumpelmann steamed in once again from around the wicket and nailed a yorker, the fuller length only magnifying the swing on offer. When the Kookaburra struck the foot, Ilyas' bat was nowhere close to the action and a desperate review revealed the white rock was striking the centre of middle stump.

While Trumpelmann wheeled away in ecstatic celebration, Twitterati quickly took to social media to heap praise on his immaculate exhibition of swing bowling.
