Cricket is a funny game, and its bizarre antics can often befuddle the participants. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey felt a glimpse of it on the ongoing fourth Test's third day between Australia and India at the MCG when a mammoth 127 runs partnership fragmented in one of the most peculiar ways possible.
Australia carried the momentum gained from the last twenty minutes of the second day's play in the fourth Test as Rishabh Pant threw away his wicket early on Saturday's morning session. Ravindra Jadeja followed a similar path, failing to convert the start as the visitors extracted a couple of scalps in the first session. With India under the pump, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar forged a scintillating 127 runs partnership to keep the Aussies toiling hard on the majority of the day's play. With both batter's confidence oozing out in their strokeplay, the Aussies needed a bit of luck going in their favor, and so it did in the 112th over.
The last ball of the 112th over saw Nathan Lyon spray the red rock down the leg stump off a length. Sundar was squared up for the flick but got the stroke off the shoulder of the blade, leading to a deflection off his pads onto the slip cordon. As the ball skewed off, Steve Smith at the second slip dived sideways and grasped the ball with firm hands, putting an end to Sundar's stay at the crease. At the same time, Carey behind the stumps anticipated the ball's trajectory to keep straight with the angle but the sudden diverge bemused him, leaving the Twitterverse stunned.
