Pakistan and Bangladesh lose WTC points for slow over rates, Shakib handed demerit point
The ICC has levied match fee fines and World Test Championship point deductions on both Pakistan and Bangladesh for slow over rates in the first Test in Rawalpindi. In the same game, Shakib Al Hasan was deemed guilty of a Level 1 Code of Conduct and will have to pay an additional 10% fine.
Pakistan were deemed to be six overs behind the required rate while Bangladesh ended up three overs behind. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, every over is worth five percent of the match fee, resulting in a 30% match fee fine for hosts Pakistan and a 15% match fee fine for Bangladesh players.
Additionally, the World Test Championship playing conditions dictate a loss of points for every over the team is behind. Heading into the series opener, Shan Masood's men needed to win at least six of their remaining nine Tests and the six-point penalty has further dented their hopes of making it to the final given two tough upcoming assignments in the form of a three-match home series against England and a two-Test series in South Africa. Bangladesh, on the other hand, faces even steeper odds, needing to win six of their remaining seven Tests which include tours of India and the West Indies.
The Test made headlines all around as Bangladesh's first-ever Test win over Pakistan as emotions ran high which also culminated in an ugly incident involving Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Rizwan in the 33rd over of the third innings. After the Pakistan batter stepped away during the spinner's run-up owing to some issues with the sight screen, Shakib unnecessarily floated the ball over Rizwan's head to the wicket-keeper, and immediately received an on-field warning from umpire Richard Kettleborough.
The veteran all-rounder later pleaded guilty to Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle for breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct that talks about inappropriately throwing a ball or any other equipment during a match and has been handed an additional 10% match fine along with a first demerit point in the current 24-month cycle.
