Not often do the coolest minds lose their calm on an international stage. Indeed, it was a rare sight to witness Shan Masood, the Pakistan captain, furious on the field after a TV umpire’s verdict did not go well with him in the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

A delayed start due to a wet outfield compelled Najmul Hossain Shanto to send the Pakistani side to bat first during the toss. The home side openers failed to get off to a good start, courtesy of Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud’s lethal opening spell. While Abdullah Shafique departed due to a terrific catch at gully, Masood trudged off the field agitated, courtesy of a controversial third umpire verdict.

Having middled three off the first four deliveries in the seventh over, a back of a length delivery around the fourth stump shaped into Masood who failed to get a bat on the intended dab off the front foot. While the original decision was not out, Shoriful Islam, the bowler seemed confident and his allies cooperated, opting for a review. As the Utraedge loaded, a spike was seen in the graph as the ball whiskered past the willow’s inside edge. Therefore, TV umpire Daren Gough signaled it as out.

However, skipper Masood was adamant to agree the decision and kept on arguing with the onfield umpires - Richard Kettleborough and Adrian Holdstock - continuously. Subsequently, he had to trudge off the ground but the cameras captured him dejected in the dugout and trying to explain to the coaching staff about the incident by gesturing a finger towards a laptop. All in all, the incident sparked a debate with the Twitterverse joining in.
