‌Russell and Holder rested as West Indies name T20I squad against South AfricaÂ
Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 15-man squad for the three-match T20I series against South Africa starting August 23. Major names such as Andre Russell and Jason Holder have been rested while Roston Chase has been named deputy to Rovman Powell in the absence of Alzarri Joseph.
Holder, who played five Tests - three against England and two against South Africa - have been rested, citing workload management. In addition, Russell had committed to be fully available for the London Spirits in the Men’s Hundred following his T20 World Cup and Major League Cricket stint. Therefore, he sought for rest.
"Andre Russell requested a period of rest and recovery as well as Jason Holder who played five back-to-back five Tests against England and South Africa. During this period, they will work closely with the CWI science and medicine team," cited Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket West Indies.
Additionally, West Indies would be missing the services of Brandon King and Alzarri who are currently nursing injuries. The former was retired hurt in a Super Eight clash during the World Cup while the latter missed the last couple of Test matches against the Proteas. Fabien Allen earned a national call-up on the back of an impressive performance in the 2024 Lanka Premier League while Shimron Hetmyer retained his spot in the squad despite warming the bench in the World Cup.
Matt Forde and Alick Athanaze are two such candidates who earned a call-back into the side after being omitted from the T20 World Cup at home.
West Indies play three T20Is against South Africa, all of which are slated to be staged at the Brian Lara International Stadium, Tarouba.
West Indies squad for SA T20Is: Rovman Powell (C), Roston Chase (VC), Alick Athanaze, Fabian Allen, Johnson Charles, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd
