‌Winning the toss and choosing to field first backfired for the Southern Brave as the Oval Invincibles' openers got off to a blistering start. Will Jacks and Dawid Malan powered the scoreboard to 44/0 after the first five sets, establishing a strong opening partnership. However, Jofra Archer broke the momentum by dismissing Malan, and the troubles for the top order continued when Tymal Mills deceived Will Jacks with a clever delivery.

On the 37th delivery, Mills came over the wicket and delivered a tempting full toss aimed at the stumps. The English opener moved towards the leg side and attempted a powerful swing to send it over the cover region but completely missed as the ball swung through the air and crashed into the stumps.
