Sri Lanka beat India by 32 runs in the second ODI, earning a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Four thirty-plus scores steered Sri Lanka to 240 before Jeffrey Vandersay concluded Rohit Sharma’s carnage and eventually scalped a six-fer to assist the hosts in earning a 1-0 series lead.

Brief Scores: SL: 240/9 [Kamindu: 40, Avishka: 40; Sundar: 3/30] beat IND: 208  [Rohit: 64, Axar: 44; Vandersay: 6/31]

Similar to the first ODI, Sri Lanka captain Chartih Asalanka opted to bat first in the second game of the ensuing series. While Mohammed Siraj removed Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck to kick off the innings, a 74-run second-wicket partnership between Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando followed before the Indian spinners took control of the game. The triumvirate of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar didn’t let the opposition settle, reducing them to 136/6 in 35 overs with the latter claiming a three-fer. Irrespective of the setbacks, Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage punched back at India after 25 runs in the next four overs. Two sixes and a four subsequently led them to a 74-run seven-wicket stand before Kuldeep got the better of Wellalage at 39 with the score reflecting 208/7. Eventually, the Lankan tail wagged to 32 runs in the last four overs to help Sri Lanka reach 240/9 in 50 overs.

Unlike their counterparts, India got off to a flying start with Rohit Sharma taking the charge and Shubman Gill playing second fiddle. The Indian captain continued his rosy form with the bat, steering to a 29-ball fifty that set up a powerplay score of 76/0. The opening pair extended the partnership to 97 runs before Jeffrey Vandersay’s introduction led to the fall of Rohit in the 14th over. Subsequently, the middle order fell like nine pins against Vandersay, losing five wickets in 37 balls with the score reflecting 147/6 in 23.1 overs. Soon, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar absorbed pressure for ten overs, adding 38 runs together before the former was caught and bowled in in the 34th over. Sundar followed suit after twelve balls, leaving India 51 runs short with 77 balls to spare. While Siraj and Arshdeep tried to hang around with Kuldeep Yadav, it was just a matter of time before the Lions foldeded them for 208 in 42.2 overs.
