Men’s Hundred | Ben Duckett’s heroics overshadowed by Hosein’s three-fer as Brave outclass Birmingham

Southern Brave beat Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs in Edgbaston. The Brave rode on the back of James Vince’s 68 runs coupled with Kieron Pollard’s 38 taking them to 169/2 whereas Ben Duckett’s 92 went in vain due to a batting collapse of the hosts, courtesy of Akeal Hosein’s three-fer.

‌Birmingham Phoenix skipper Moeen Ali won the toss as they squared off against Southern Brave in Birmingham. The decision backfired when Braves openers Alex Davies and James Vince started strong taking the score to 31/0 in the fifth set. They shifted gears thereafter and accelerated to 81/0 in just 45 deliveries with the Brave skipper scoring a 24-ball half-century. The introduction of spin worked for Phoenix as Benny Howell took Davies' wicket on the 46th delivery, but the momentum stayed with the Brave reaching 100 on the 61st delivery. After Leus du Plooy's dismissal on the 63rd, Kieron Pollard joined Vince and kept the runs flowing. Additionally, Pollard anchored the innings while Vince attacked, reaching a strike rate of 197 with the score at 154/2 in 90 deliveries. Ultimately, their partnership of 68 runs with Vince scoring 90 off 47 took Southern Brave to 169/2.

In response, Phoenix openers Ben Duckett and Aneurin Donald got off to a flying start, racing to 30/0 in the third set. However, the introduction of spin worked again as Akeal Hosein dismissed Donald on the 17th delivery. But Duckett continued aggressively and with Liam Livingstone, the Phoenix reached 75/1 in 40 deliveries. Livingstone's dismissal on the 50th delivery shifted momentum as Moeen Ali, Dan Mousley, and Jacob Bethell fell quickly, leaving Phoenix at 103/5 in 70 deliveries. Needing 67 from 30 deliveries, Phoenix relied heavily on Duckett. Unfortunately, Hosein struck again removing Louis Kimber and Benny Howell in the 14th set reducing Phoenix to 104/7. With 62 needed from 20 deliveries, Duckett's fight continued as the Phoenix needed 48 from the last two sets. Ultimately, with Sean Abbott and Duckett’s dismissal in the final set, the Phoenix lost the contest by 32 runs as they could manage just 137/9.
