IPL 2024 | Twitter reacts to Varun three-fer and swashbuckling Salt help KKR bounce back at home
Kolkata Knight Riders beat Delhi Capitals by seven wickets and 21 balls to spare in the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Early wickets with new ball coupled with Varun Chakaravarthy’s three-fer was backed by a ferocious 79-run opening partnership that set up for a bounce back in their home game.
Brief Scores: DC: 153/9 [Kuldeep: 35*, Pant: 27; 4-0-16-3] lost to KKR: 157/3 [Phil Salt: 68, Shreyas: 33*; Axar: 4-0-25-2] by seven wickets.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first did not prove effective for the Delhi Capitals as their top three departed within the powerplay after getting a brisk start. Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc snarred the wickets for KKR with the new ball to sum up a 67-run powerplay. They added 26 runs in the next four overs including Harshit Rana cleaning up local boy Abishek Porel in the seventh over. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy regulated the middle overs phase brilliantly, bucketing four wickets for forty runs in their overall eight overs to reduce DC to 112/8 in 15 overs. Subsequently, Kuldeep Yadav continued to hold one end and keep the scoreboard ticking. A 16-run 16th over released a bit of pressure for DC and Kuldeep’s 35 helped them post 153 runs in 20 overs.
Unlike their opposition, KKR got off to a rollicking start, courtesy of a 23-run opening over conceded by Lizaad Williams. Although Khaleel Ahmed tried to curb the KKR run-scoring rate from the other end, runs leaked from the other end with Williams and Rasikh Salem going for 13 and 15 runs respectively. In the following over, Salt spanked Khaleel and brought up his half-century to conclude a 79-run powerplay, thereby setting up the chase. However, the introduction of Axar Patel slowed down the chase as the all-rounder removed the KKR openers in the seventh and eighth over, followed by Williams removing Rinku Singh in the next over. Subsequently, the Iyer duo of Shreyas and Venkatesh negated the DC spinners to bring down the equation to 13 needed off the last five overs. Eventually, the pair chalked down the chase convincingly by seven wickets to bounce back at their home.
