T20 World Cup 2021 | MS Dhoni has still got the Midas touch and his presence will benefit India, says Farokh Engineer
Former India wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer believes that MS Dhoni, who has been appointed as the team’s mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, is a value addition to the setup. Engineer remarked that Dhoni's experience and calm will be of great benefit to the team.
MS Dhoni, the former India captain, was appointed as team’s mentor for T20 World Cup 2021 last week. Dhoni, who led India to triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, had retired from international cricket in August 2020.
Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer believes that the 40-year-old has "still got the Midas touch” and that his presence will benefit the team immensely at the marquee event.
"I was a bit surprised to see MS Dhoni in this role, but why not. IPL has mentors. Dhoni has always and still has got the Midas touch and whatever he has touched has turned into gold,” Engineer told Sports Tak.
“I would hope that Dhoni brings us extra luck and I'm sure his knowledge would be extremely useful. He is a World Cup-winning captain after all. So, his very presence in the dressing room will have a great effect on the team.”
Engineer further highlighted the significance of a mentor within a group, and that an inspirational figure like him is a high-value addition in any team setup.
"What does a mentor do? It's an honorary thing,” remarked Engineer. “Sachin Tendulkar is the mentor of Mumbai Indians. And it’s lovely to have guys like him and Sachin around. In our time, once you gave up the game, people forgot us. But today, fans do not forget. If you're a good and attractive cricketer, fans will always remember you."
"Dhoni has been appointed as mentor. It's nice to have Dhoni alongside the team because of his experience, his coolness will certainly be a great inspiration to the team. I'm delighted that the BCCI has taken this decision. At this level, players are not coached. A coach can help you and guide you just a little bit – some things here and there or on some technical aspects.
"Dhoni is not the type to interfere with something or somebody. If he sees that something could be done better, I'm sure he would suggest it in a very clever way to Ravi and Virat.”
