IPL 2019 | Virender Sehwag brings an end to his four-year-long Kings XI Punjab association
Virender Sehwag, on Twitter, has announced his resignation as the team mentor and the head of cricket operations from the Kings XI Punjab set-up. Before taking up the role with the team, the former Indian opener had represented the franchise as a player during the 2014 and 2015 editions of the IPL.
Sehwagâs tenure in the franchise was a disastrous one and the team seemed to going nowhere as they lost 23 while winning 17 matches in the period. However, Sehwag was credited for building up a nice culture in the team and was praised by many for his tactical decision to give the captaincy to Ravichandran Ashwin, which was rendered unsuccessful though. Sehwagâs parting with the franchise came on the back of Mike Hessonâs appointment as the coach last month.
As per a Cricinfo report, Sehwagâs contract as the head of cricket operations was up for renewal, but the Preity Zinta-owned franchise decided against it, thinking it might create a confusion among both players and team management. Instead, the franchise decided to give more freedom to Hesson to take decisions and build his own support staff group.
All good things must come to an end and I've had a wonderful time at Kings 11 Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead.

While Sehwag is leaving the franchise, it will be a tough work for Hesson, who replaced Brad Hodge as the Kings XI coach, to resurrect the team and make them qualify for the final once again. However, he has started his process as well and met the franchise's leadership group this week to start planning for the IPL auction in December.Â
