Irfan Pathan to coach and mentor Jammu and Kashmir in next domestic season
Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association has announced, on Friday, that in the 2018-19 season, Irfan Pathan will perform the role of the coach-cum-mentor for their senior state team. Pathan was unable to find any buyer in the auction for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
Pathan’s cricket career was in doldrums after he was ousted from the Baroda team as skipper and as a player. Upon the news became public, the former Indian star started fuming over it and took to Twitter to slam the Baroda Cricket Association authorities for the same. Then, he made it clear that he was in look out for some teams to participate in the next year’s domestic season and J&K was the biggest priority for him then.
And now, the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) has cleared the air that it has appointed the Baroda all-rounder as the coach and mentor for their senior side for the upcoming edition of Ranji Trophy and other domestic competitions. Yesterday, after arriving in Kashmir, Pathan spent time with the young cricketers at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium and told them to work hard on their game so as to reach the highest level.
Pathan, who played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for India between 2003 and 2012, burst onto the scene as one of the most prodigiously talented bowlers and his hat-trick in a foggy morning against Pakistan has still been a huge part of the Indian cricket’s lore. And while his cricket career is a stop-gap one, it remains to be seen how much he can contribute as a coach and mentor to the J&K cricket, who has started taking forward steps only recently.
