Gambhir asked us not to bid for him, reveals KKR MD Venky Mysore
In a startling revelation, Kolkata Knight Riders’ managing director, Venky Mysore, has stated that Gautam Gambhir had requested them to refrain from retaining or use RTM card on him in the auction. The two-time IPL winning skipper, consequently, went to Delhi Daredevils for a paltry 2.8 crores.
KKR’s decision to not retain their most successful skipper had surely raised many eyebrows, and the surprise turned into a shock when Gambhir went under the hammer for as less as 2.80 crores in the mega-auction, and KKR opted to ignore him once again.
Twitter had already been flooded by angry rants from KKR
"He was very much in our plans for the auctions via RTM. But he had a conversation with us well before. He felt that there might be a different challenge before (him), we don't know what it was. And (he) requested if we would refrain from bidding from him or using Right To Match. And we said we will never come in the way of anyone's progress or anyone's aspirations... We're sorry to see him go, seven great years," he said.
Starting his stint with Delhi Daredevils in the first three years, Gambhir was taken by KKR in 2011 as the franchise decided to replace the local favourite Sourav Ganguly with the Delhi Southpaw. Gambhir led KKR to the title in 2012 and 2014 and could reach the playoffs thrice in 2011, 2016 and 2017.
