Nidahas Trophy | Dinesh Chandimal to lead Sri Lanka tr-series
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board announced the squad for the Nidahas Trophy and named Dinesh Chandimal as their captain for the tri-series as Angelo Mathews will miss the tournament due to a recurring calf injury. The tri-series also involving India and Bangladesh is set to begin on March 6 in Colombo.
Mathews had been suffering from the calf injury for over a year which forced him to miss the tri-series involving Bangladesh and Zimbabwe last month. Due to his absence, Chandimal was again asked to lead the side and has been handed over with the responsibility.Â
Lasith Malinga's frustrating wait for making a comeback to the team continued for yet another series and it has started becoming an open secret that the 34-year-old hasn't been in their part of their plans anymore. However, chairman of Selectors Graham Labrooy made it clear that the non-selection wasn't the end of the road for Malinga.
"He is certainly in our plans for 2019 World Cup, but we want him to play more games. We want him to play the current T20 competition and then the one-day tournament after that," Labrooy told Cricbuzz.
While the selectors have added Nuwan Pradeep, Kusal Perera, and Dushmantha Chameera in the squad, youngster Sadeera Samarawickrama, who has been widely considered as one of the brightest prospects in the country, has also been picked in the preliminary squad.Â
Sri Lanka will announce the 15 man squad on Wednesday.
Preliminary squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Niroshan Dickwella, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Isuru Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dhananjaya, Amila Aponso, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Dananjaya De Silva.
