Indian Olympic Association president Narinder Batra has stated that SY Qureshi is a ‘liar’ and a ‘dishonest’ person as he is not conducting the elections of the Archery Association according to the Court’s guidelines. The Archery Association of India was derecognised by the government back in 2012.

All is not going well in the lead up to the Archery Association of India’s (AAI) election which is to be held on Saturday. With the Court appointing an administrator of AAI, SY Qureshi is all set to conduct the election of the Archery body as per the schedule both the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) and the Sports Ministry seem worried. The IOA feels that the controversial elections will have a huge impact on the administration of the sports and also impact the functioning of various other National Sports Bodies(NSB).

“Qureshi is lying and misquoting the 2017 order of the Supreme Court which states that the administrator must hold elections as per the existing provisions of the sports code. He is conducting elections as per the revised draft of the code which no one has seen as it is lying with the Delhi High Court in a sealed envelope,” Batra told TOI.

Coming under such criticism, Qureshi seemed determined to conduct the elections and informed that he will go ahead with the election as per the schedule. Both Sports Ministry and IOA seemed least interested in appointing observers for the elections and in-turn termed the elections as ‘unconstitutional’.

The problem stems from the fact that the sports code of 2011 does not bar public servants (ministers, MPs, MLAs and serving bureaucrats) from holding offices in the NSFs while restricting associate members and individual members from voting during the elections. Qureshi, on the other hand, has barred public servants from contesting elections and granted voting rights to associate members and to individual archers.
