Former India coach John Wright labelled India as the favourites for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Cup, which will be held from March 8 to April 3 across eight venues in India. The Mumbai Indians coach also hailed Virat Kohli as a “passionate” and “aggressive” leader at Bengaluru on Sunday.

“India, obviously, as they're playing at home. It's probably too early to tell. Playing here is a big advantage. The big trick will be selecting the combination,” John Wright told The Times of India (ToI), when asked about the favourites for the trophy.

John Wright, who coached India from 2000 to 2005, also hailed Indian Test captain Virat Kohli’s leadership skills. “I've always liked Virat's approach to the game. He's passionate and aggressive. You pick your best eleven and then pick your captain; he's always going to be in your best eleven. He's got huge shoes to fill but he's up for the job. Captaincy is a great opportunity, but it's a tough job,” he told ToI.

The New Zealander, who was in Bengaluru as a talent scout for Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians, also expressed his opinion on the controversy surrounding turning pitches.

“From what I understand, one of the wickets turned a lot but the rest weren't too bad. I don't think it's a bad thing where countries have different conditions to examine technique. If you look at any side that comes here and you know you have wickets that turn, the first question you ask as an Indian coach is do they have a quality spinner that can make life as difficult for us as we can or them? India were stronger in the spin department. The challenge will be when India go back to South Africa. I imagine they're going to get wickets with grass,” the 61-year old told The Times of India.

The coach also spoke in support of Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma, who has been going through a poor run in Tests.

“When Rohit is in full flight... he's one of the most exciting players I've seen, in terms of ball-striking ability with classical shots. I'm sure there's a place for him among the top six in India in any form of the game. Players like Rohit, because they're so brilliant in the way they play, because of their shot-making ability, they take risks. His innings last year in the final won us IPL. In Test cricket, it's a matter of feeling at home, particularly in India.”

“Sometimes you've got to stick with players. The thing about Test cricket is you want to feel at home in the team, you don't want to be judged every time you go to the wicket. I hope that he succeeds in Test cricket because he adds such a lot to a side,” the New Zealander said.
