END OF INDIAN MEN'S BOXING HOPES IN PARIS
Nishant Dev was the last Indian male boxer still alive in the Games. His exit means India's hopes of a boxing medal rely solely on Lovlina Borgohain. The Bronze winner from Tokyo takes on Chinese top-seed Qian Li in the quarterfinal tomorrow at 3 PM IST. On that hopeful note, we bid you adieu!
04 Aug, 12:43
Men's 71kg | Dev (IND) 1-4 Alvarez (MEX)
The Mexican took that last round unanimously and it sealed what had been a balanced bout across the opening two rounds. The Mexican was brutal and unrelenting in attack, pushing Dev against the ropes and into the corner at every possible opportunity. He gave the second seed a fair fight though and for large parts threatened to take the fight comfortably.
A couple big hooks from Alvarez that connected in the dying embers ultimately proved decisive. The result is nothing to be ashamed about for Dev and he has already proven a bright future is in store. I would be surprised if he is not one of the favourites for a medal come 2028.
FINAL SCORE

Nishant Dev has risen through the ranks rapidly in recent times. He has shown great pedigree on his Olympics debut already to get to the quarterfinals. His stiffest challenge so far awaits though in the form of Mexican second-seed Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez. Dev will be the clear underdog and need to be at the absolute top of his game if he is to pull off an upset.
