Ace archer Deepika Kumari, who finished 20th in the women’s individual ranking round yesterday, expressed disappointment with her performance and blamed the wind for the poor show. The 22-year-old, who also missed an arrow during the event, said that “nothing was wrong apart from the wind”.

After the high by Atanu Das, much was expected from the women archers. But they failed to live up to expectations as Deepika Kumari (20th), Bombayla Devi (24th), Laxmirani Majhi (43rd) all produced below-par performances. 22-year-old Deepika Kumari, who is participating in her second Olympics, only managed to score 640 out of a possible 720 and also missed an arrow in the event to finish to finish the day on a disappointing note for India. The women’s team also ended up at a disastrous seventh position and will have to face Columbia on Sunday to move into the quarters.

"Nothing was wrong apart from the wind. It was difficult to follow and understand. I shot the arrow and it was a miss.

"Of course, it's not what I expected, but there's nothing I can do about it now," Deepika said after the event, reported PTI.

Deepika Kumari will next face Georgia’s Kristine Esebua, who finished 45th, in the individual event, while Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi will face Austria's Laurence Baldauff and Slovakia's Alexandra Longová respectively in their Round of 64 matches on Monday (August 8).

In the morning session, Atanu Das gave India something to cheer as he finished fifth in the men’s individual ranking round with 683. The 22-year-old will next face Jitbahadur Muktan of Nepal, who finished 60th with 607 points in the Round of 64 match on Monday (August 8).
